Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger face backlash for demolishing a historic 1950s house.
The couple paid $12.5 million for the Zimmerman house in LA, designed by renowned architects, say reports.
A 15,000-square-foot farmhouse-style mansion will replace the former architectural gem.
Actor Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, decision to raze a historic 1950s house in LA to build a contemporary mansion has upset architectural enthusiasts, say reports.
A recent Robb Report article said that when the blockbuster actor and the self-help author bought the property last year, it featured a historic home they had demolished.
The decision by Pratt, 44, who has starred in several Marvel franchise superhero movies and the "Jurassic World" trilogy, and his wife, has caused anguish for architectural devotees who admired the iconic midcentury single-story house, The Guardian reported.
Architect Craig Ellwood designed the Zimmerman house with Emiel Becsky, and the landscape was designed by Garrett Eckbo, per USModernist Archives .
The levelled residence, built in 1950, once featured in Progressive Architecture magazine.
The Eichler Network , committed to preserving midcentury modern classics, published an op-ed mourning the loss of the Ellwood original and wrote of "shock, disbelief at the pile of rubble" left after the property was knocked down.
"Witnessing the demolition of revered residential architecture is a gut punch. Even walking the inclined driveway leading to the empty lot where such a home once stood can be painful," wrote Adriene Biondo.
The house was built in Brentwood, a quiet, upscale neighborhood in western LA. The A-list couple now plan to build a 15,000-square-foot farmhouse-style mansion with a pool, The Guardian reported.
The property is across the street from Katherine Schwarzenegger's mother, Maria Shriver, the journalist and Kennedy family member, who was previously married to the former governor of California and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Nearby neighbors include Arianna Huffington and Sofia Richie, say reports.
The Zimmerman house belonged to Hilda Rolfe, the widow of the co-creator of "The Man from UNCLE" series, Sam Rolfe, before its off-market sale to Pratt and Schwarzenegger for $12.5 million.
The couple, who have two children, also have a mansion in the hills of Pacific Palisades, which is on the market for $30 million, according to reports.
